I've had the same problem in the past with DDoS...I still do but it doesn't effect my server much (maybe a min or 2 per day; use to be around 5 hours of downtime a day).
I went with
Linux Server Management - Professional System Administration - AdminGeekZ and they've done WONDERS of a job. You might want to talk to them and tell them what your budget is like and they may be able to work with you. I saw you wanted to go to an AWKNET and how it is expensive...IDK how expensive that could be but compare the prices. Admingeekz do a wonderful job and respond to tickets VERY quickly if you put it on "high" priority. Even on low it gets done within minutes if they are not working on someone else's site. The longest I've waited on a low ticket was 1-2 hours.
I hope this helps. I know how frustrating DDoS attacks are... I use to always have to be on the computer to make sure my site was working...now I can go days...weeks...etc without checking up on it b/c I know admingeekz are keeping it live.
