i am seeing that yahoo is indexing a lot of dead pages from my older forum...
i have told vbseo to show visitors a custom 404 page. but reply delivered with this page is 200 which results in search engines indexing the 404 page.
if i tell vbseo to show Send 404 HTTP code it works fine.
can i combine the two options?

You should add this code in your custom php 404 handler:
PHP Code:header ("HTTP/1.1 404 Not Found");
