When I browse around some of the "not found" urls in Google webmaster tools I notice some of these threads are soft deleted. The date next to these links indicates a recent date where these threads should have not been in a sitemap. Any idea?

When I browse around some of the "not found" urls in Google webmaster tools I notice some of these threads are soft deleted. The date next to these links indicates a recent date where these threads should have not been in a sitemap. Any idea?
Once a link is IN google, it will take a while to fall out of it, just like it isn't instant getting placed on the index.
Eventually, it will 404 enough times for google to remove it from it's index.
Do you physically see the link in one of your xml.gz sitemap files?
