I have a user with the name: 七喜

I would like to use the members/[user_name].html format, but if I do, this user's URL becomes members/and-19971-and-21916.html which is invalid.

So, I'm using members/[user_id].html which works fine.

Is there any way to use a "mixed mode" where names with non-english characters use the userid, and those with all english characters use the username?

we've fixed the problem with characters like 七 - they will be filtered now and not included in URL (this will work with next vBSEO release).
Having that, you can set your member profile url like "members/[user_name]-[user_id].html". In this case:
- non-english characters are removed
- "english" usernames will be included nicely in url
- all profiles are loaded correctly using [user_id] part

You can also set VBSEO_REWRITE_MEMBER_MORECHARS setting to 1 in config_vbseo.php: in this case member urls will be urlencoded and you will be able leave your "members/[user_name].html" format.

Good idea. Using the urlencoded version for member urls will make that specific profile display properly without having to use [user_id]'s for all profiles.
