Links to member pages

I have a few members with strange characters in their usernames and it is screwing up the rewrites. How can I change the links to member profiles to use the user ID (#) instead of the user name? I tried changing the cfg file from 0 to 1 in the special character rewrites and it still breaks their profile links. I just need something like this but where do I change it?

The member profile URL format can be customized in vBSEO CP->URL Rewrites section (click "+" to expand Advanced settings).
