Jump to the first unread Post

    Hi guys,

I read about this problem in some older threads (one year ago) and this issue should ne fixed in version 2.x already.
My users opened up a suppport thread on our forums having this issue. Not every time, but from time to time, it happens. Instead of jumping to the first unread post you will jump to the first post. Same happens sometimes if you would like to jump to post number 123 you will end up at 87.
As I say it only happens some time, but its not reproduceable.

    Any idea what's wrong?

Do you have vBulletin set to use the database for storing thread/post read markers? If so, how many days do you have it set to?

If it's a really old thread (older than the number of days you have set), and there is a new reply to it, the First Unread link will just send them to the top of the thread. You can increase the number of days if you want, but you don't want to go too high.

Yes we store this information in the database for 7 days. Can you point me to the table in which this data is stored to check if I can increase this number? Any tipps for a forum with about 1.5 million posts, with about 100-300 user online at the same time for this value?

I too am having exactly this problem. When it goes to the first post in error it's definitely an error because the new posts have the little orange icon and the old posts the little blue one.

Any clues - had vbseo on for a day or so now, and am already getting complaints.

Check entry #13 in the troubleshooting.txt file in the vBSEO Docs directory.

Keith, thank you for the reply - I should have given you more detail...

My vb is 3.6.8 and uses the automatic database marking, set at 10 days. Prior to installing vbseo, the new post features worked fine. My theme is in essence the default vb theme, with just a few graphics changed.

    The problem (when it appears):

A new post is appended to a thread where the last post is more than 10 days old. vB knows there is a new post, and uses the new post icon (, not ). It also knows there is a new post because the thread will appear in the "new posts" list. But when you click on the "Go to new post" icon , the link takes you to the first post in the thread.

If the thread was a mulitpage thread, because you have still not seen the new post, if you do a new "New Posts" search the thread is still there. You try clicking on but still you are taken to the first post, not the new post. So vbulletin knows there is a new post, but vbseo is only taking you to the first post.

    The weirdness:

Others have mentioned that the appearance of this error seems random. The error occurs in all my forum sections, with the exception of my moderators forum. This is a private forum, but if you post onto a very old thread, the "go to new post" function works fine.

    Other oddities:

Page rendering seems odd - sometimes when a link of the format forumname/123-thread.html#post12345 is called the page renders and doesn't put the anchor at the top. if you F5, then it is no better. If you cut the link out of the URL bar, paste it in and press enter, all is fine. Seems to happen when there are inline images. Not sure whether this is related (does it in FF2 and IE7).

Whilst troubleshooting, I turned off code clean up, and insert image dimensions. I did a test on an ancient thread in my main forum, and the function worked! I kept testing and it didn't work from then on.

    Request:

Given that this is broken - please can I have my old fashioned, pre-vbseo link back for new posts. I will sacrifice any SEO benefits for a working forum!

I have submitted this as a support ticket, number 4605, hoping that I may get an answer soon.
