There is no need to modify .htaccess file in most cases and it should uploaded into forums folder as described in readme.html:

You should upload ".htaccess" file (with leading dot and without .txt in filename).

Why does it say to upload it in Binary mode? I've been uploading stuff like that for 12 years, and anytime you do that, it screws it up. Shouldn't it be ASCII?

Likely, that would be due to this article being written when vBSEO was encrypted. This requires binary mode to avoid corruption.

Again, yes another thank you for the OP. My forum went down as well, and these instructions fixed it perfectly.

Agreed with everyone else that these instructions should be in the official instructions - why they still aren't after all this feedback is beyond me. ???

Would have to disagree - naturally we may be in the excepted few, but there are more than enough people here that purchased vbSEO whereas these newbie instructions kept our sites from being down for an extended period of time. I would've hated waiting for a support ticket to be resolved while my forum remained down indefinitely on a holiday weekend. Would recommend these instructions simply get added in, maybe just say "In the event your forum doesn't work ..." Surely that's pretty simple.
