HACKED for a KNOWN PERSON in the USA

Ok my mind is cool, trying to decide what can I do...

I hired a programmer via Guru.com to upgrade a script, but the job went wrong and I paid half since I can't use the script anyway...
I know the guy, it was the only one I gave access at that level, I got his threatening emails saved, and he couldn't go farther than the public_html's folder...
My question is? how can I do to proceed legally?
I've invested around $1000.00 on scripts, all my licenses were there:
-vBulletin
-vBSEO
-GARS
-PHP Auction
-Million Dollar Script
-vBMailer Full
-PeelAds
etc...

HOW CAN I TRACE IT AND GET A PROOF THAT COULD BUST HIM?
I know there's more experienced ppl here than me and him...
Second... how can I protect my licenses?
I'm 99.9% sure he was it, since we worked a month ago, and with that FTP's password he just could erased everything on that folder and no other folder hold the same password... almost a year of work.

Please from vBulletiner to vBulletiner, tell me what do you do???

What do I do? I change any password after giving it to anyone that I don't trust implicitly.

Re-reading your post, I can't actually see that anything bad has happened, except for one line "the job went wrong".

Most reputable companies store license information based on your name/email address/personal details. Nobody would be able to 'take' your vBulletin license for example. However, if you failed to take reasonable steps to protect the files and someone took them and distributed them, you could be held responsible.
