"Go to first new post" glitch

After installing the script and an .htaccess file in my site root and my forum root, including optimizing the vBSEO configuration in the CP, I find that the "Go to first new post" link does not always take me to the first new post. Many times it takes me to the first post instead. Is there someplace I can repair or check on this function? I'll check on the vB site too, but it only started when I installed the vBSEO script.

Thanks. I tried a search on this, but got no results on the term I used in the title and was told "new" was too common a term. Maybe this thread will help anyone in the future who has this problem and uses the actual name of the function for their search.

AdminCP -> vBulletin Options -> General Settings -> Thread/Forum Read Marking Type

Make sure it's set to: "Database (automatic forum marking)"

That should take care of it. The old way of tracking unread posts that vBulletin used (cookies) was unreliable, which is why they added this new option.

OK, I did that. The Inactivity/Cookie Based was originally selected. When I switched to Database (automatic forum marking) and refreshed the forum, it marked every forum as unread. Is that normal? Now all my members will think they have new messages in every forum?

    Thanks.

Yeah, when you first make the switch they will have to use the Quick Links -> Mark All Forums Read option to give a fresh start, then they'll be golden from then on out.

Here's the post I made on my site to give them the details: New Posts - FireBlades.org

Thanks, Kieth. I think I'm going to like that setting. I followed your lead and left a message for my members about it.

Worked but made the server load go ridiculously out of control.

Shane, could you please elaborate on that? I think you are the only one who knows what you mean by that, but it sounds alarming enough to be important to anyone reading this thread.

This shouldn't have a dramatic effect on server load.

How many days back do you have it set to remember? I think default is 14 days.

Well I have the same issue, first new post just never works at all with vbseo and the cookie option. I've read a few threads here but the only option suggested is move to the database. However, I can't. It caused more issues than it solved with the large volume of posts and forums we have. People went from having 3-4 pages of new posts to 11-12. It's not a large site, but we do get about 1,500 posts / day.

I'm currently running 3.5.3 VB and 2.4.0 VBSEO.

As was mentioned before, tide, it shows an over-abundance of new posts for the members who first log in with the new setting, but after marking everything read, it is remarkably more efficient. I like it much better. Just give it a chance.

Ah must have missed that skimming this thread. I was having the same thought though independently. They shall wait then!

Uh, no sorry, I misread your idea. I can't use database forum marking, I get too many complaints, I know that fundamentally that it is a better way of marking but the forum is simply too large and the members enjoy the bliss that when their session ends, only posts since they were there are new. I can't change from cookies. If I disable VBSeo, it works as expected.

    Hi Juan,

This is an old thread and you left out who said that. If you were referring to me (I'm old, I don't remember what I said an hour ago), yes, my issues concerning this thread have been resolved and I am enjoying vBSEO. If it wasn't me... never mind.
