After I installed vbSEO I now get the error:
Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 16777216 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 8192 bytes) in /home/dealcetera/public_html/forum.dealcetera.com/public/includes/searchwords.php on line 543

What if you are on shared hosting and they will not do it?

    curious....

I've a dedicated server with a similar problem. We recently migrated to new servers with php 5.2.11 and Mysql 5. I set the memory limit to -1 and restarted the httpd (apache) service.

    Afterwards I got this error:
Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 44040192 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 56163361 bytes) in /home/mmtalk/public_html/jobs/vbseo_sitemap/vbseo_sitemap_functions.php on line 1298

Have submitted a ticket to support and they suggested I set memory limit to 128MB. That doesn't make much sense to me. I've 3GB of memory on the boxes and they only run the forum and some mailing software.

The technician did tell me something curious. That the -1 didn't really set the memory limit to unlimited.

Anyone have ideas? This makes no logical sense.

I can't find any documentation that php.ini accepts negative values.

We recommend a minimum of 32M.
Larger sites will require more memory.

I personally run 256M on my server. (8gb ram)

Another option is to disable some sitemap items
    - the yahoo format txt map. This is no longer necessary (yahoo accepts xml.gz files now and has for some time. This setting will be deprecated in our next sitemap generator release)
    - showpost pages. We suggest using the Permalink setting, and basically disabling showpost altogether. [How To] Replace Showpost Links with Permalinks - Max Out Search Engine Crawling Efficiency
    - "B" pages. such as tags, polls, members, etc. The only necessary sections to include is showthread. Forumdisplay is a close second. All other pages I would consider optional, and as your site gets bigger, they become un-necessary to include in the sitemap. Many will still get indexed anyway, as all your threads have links to members, polls, tag, etc etc.
