The reason I suspect it's a vbSEO thing rather than just the vB upgrade is that the links showed up fine when de-activated vbSEO. Any info pointing me in the right direction will help.
Worst case scenario - if there's a way to disable rewritten URL's on just that page, maybe I could try that until a better solution is found?

Update: the issue was related to a custom plugin for displaying photos on profile page.
