Blank Pages on Long Threads

Hi - I've just upgraded php and mysql to find that longers showthread pages (more than about 13 posts) are coming up blank. I though it would be an xcache problem, so turned that off but no change, eventually I turned vbseo off and this fixed it. Please help me work out what is happening.

please try to increase memory_limit setting in PHP configuration if it's currently set to 8M.

Ah yes, I just spotted that it was at 8M when I went into the admincp. I'll go try that now.
