While we do limit each account to no more than 25% of a system's resources in our terms of service, we do not actively disable accounts until they greatly exceed that number, which is what happened in this case. Fortunately, we were able to isolate the cause to a small set of files/folders. Rather than disabling the entire account, we were able to disable just those files/folders.
It was necessary to disable these items to maintain a minimum level of proper service for everyone else. From this point, the following options are available:
a) Block heavy users of your site, if any, that may be causing excessive load.
b) Optimize scripts (php, etc) that may be consuming a large amount of cpu and/or RAM.
c) Upgrade to a dedicated server; your site may have outgrown a shared environment.
Please let us know if you have a solution you feel would resolve this issue. Should a solution not be forthcoming, we are happy to assist you with an upgrade to dedicated services, where your site will have room to grow without affecting other customers. I appreciate your attention to this matter. Thank you.
Anyone have any ideas how I stop this from happening again?

I did get some Vbulletin Database Error emails as follows:

Quote:

Looks like you're outgrowing the VPS.

You should consider getting a better server and work with a better hosting company.

And since all pages are processed through vbseo.php, it makes it appear that vbseo.php is taking up too many resources, when that's not entirely true.

We have received enough complaints now about HostGator that I'm comfortable stating that IMO it should not be considered a good choice for a forum hosting provider, especially not for vBSEO customers.

I have received good feedback about pair.com and asmallorange.com.

agreed.

95% of 'my site got shut off' are hostgator customers.

You should probably be on a VPS judging by visiting your forums

"Total members that have visited the forum in the last 24 hours: 99"

Thats just the members, not counting all the guests and spiders that have visited and you. Combine that with vBulletin, the addons your running and traffic you're probably going to hit the resource cap at any hosting company.

For a VPS I'd suggest InMotion Hosting Reviews I've been getting good reports about their VPS offerings. And URL Jet which claims to be specifically for vBulletin boards seems to do a good job as well but are rather pricey for shared solutions.

I am working wih ServeInt and their service is brilliant. I can highly suggest them.

All i can find about Hostgator is nightmare stories. It is really interesting to see why people donot search around for reviews etc.

Ditto !

Using HG for past 2 years.
I'll move out to a VPS once the problems start (slowdowns).

I'm with theplanet. Can't fault them - they have a cheap P4 dedicated server with 2GB for $67.64 at the moment. Not bad for an entry level server if you need more than a VPS but aren't making much on advertising.

  • FightRice: There are 755 other sites hosted with you.
  • Shadab: There are 808 other sites hosted with you.
  • And I run a small blog with HG that I do find runs slow, with less than 100 hits a day. The server has 1829 other sites running on the same machine.
It is at least, the above #s, since this lookup was done via the IP address.

I got the exact same B.S. from Hostgator.

I'm going to look around for another hosting company.

My board isn't that active that it requires a dedicated server.

Yes, HostGator makes it seem like vbseo is the problem.

I have disabled most major tasks at my forum and I still get this same message from Hostgator.

I'll move tomorrow, but for now, I have a cool 403 Error Forbidden page as my forum..

Talk about awesome! VBSEO really has paid for itself. If you don't believe me, go take a look at my forum, it is not accessible! Talk about awesome!
