I feel like such an idiot right now...

After creating a support ticket, Mert Gökçeimam told me that either mod_rewrite was not functioning on my server, or my .htaccess file was outdated. Turns out the .htaccess file was outdated...

Thanks for your help, and I hope this thread will help others in the future.

RemoveHandler .html .htm AddType application/x-httpd-php .php .htm .html

might be the cause.

are you using preset 1, which uses .html extentions on the rewrite?

if so, vbseo spits back as .html, which your htaccess might try to re-process...

try removing that line.

Uhm, I fixed the problem by updating the .htaccess file to 3.2.0
