404 errors in Internet Explorer - AFTER the page loads up

I installed vbSEO and it seemed to be doing fine, until i got a few emails saying that people were going to my site, and every page they visited loaded up for a few seconds then sort of redirected to a 404 error.
i narrowed it down to internet explorer, and removing the .htaccess file stopped the problem happening (and stopped vbSEO doing its job, obviously)
i searched and didnt get anything relevant, does anyone have any ideas how i can fix this? id hate to see something this expensive (well, it is for a charitable non-profit site) go to waste when theres obviously so much potential.

the site is SpeakOut! but that wont show much as ive got the .htaccess file removed.

i hadnt edited the .htaccess file in any way.

    Hello Gav,

do you mean that there were errors with IE only, and the forum was working fine with other browsers? Does it happen to the whole forums or to certain pages only?

yes, it only happened in internet explorer, having tested it in IE, Firefox and Opera.
it happened on every page in www.speakout. biz / forum /, which is what led me to identify the .htaccess file as the problem.

    I have the same problem.

Hello, I have an identical problem, which happens only in IE.
I see that the page is loaded, and then 404 - page not found.

But I can view forum in IE if the line
    PHP Code:
    RewriteRule ^(.+)$ vbseo.php [L,QSA
    is commented.
