Site map broken 1.5 to 1.7 upgrade

I upgraded today from VBSEO 2.x to the 3.x RC8. At the same time I upgraded vbsite_maps from 1.5 to 1.7. I am running vbulletin 3.0.x

I now get this when I try to run the site map generator (several thousand times until the browser crashes):

Warning: preg_replace(): Compilation failed: nothing to repeat at offset 14 in /includes/functions_vbseo.php on line 517

I tried restoring the sitemap generator to the older version (1.5) and I get the same error! Help!
