Setting Up Sitemap Generator v1.7

First off, I assume v.1.7 is the latest and greatest at this time?

I'm running vB 3.6 and it doesn;t say it works with this version (it only says 3.5.x).

Here are the instructions:
  1. Go to your ADMIN CP > vBulletin Options > vBSEO Google/Yahoo Sitemap Generator
  2. Edit your settings as desired
  3. Important: Enter your Direct Script Run Code (this is also your password for your automated reports)
  4. Go to your ADMIN CP > Scheduled Tasks > Add New Scheduled Task
  5. Edit new task options:
  • Title: vBSEO - Create Google/Yahoo Sitemap
  • Filename: ./vbseo_sitemap/vbseo_sitemap.php
  • Set task schedule according to your forums activity. For instance, to generate a daily sitemap at 2AM set:
    • Day of the Week: *
    • Day of the Month: *
    • Hour: 2 (or any other)
    • Minute: 0 - - -
a) I don't even see what you guys are talking about in #3 (Direct Script Run Code).
b) In #5, there are other entries you did not specify: What is VARNAME? LOG PHRASE? PRODUCT (vBulletin by default or vBSEO :: Sitemap Generator)?

1.7 is what you want to run, yes.

a) this is only needed if you want to run the generator manually through a url (the task runs it daily, and you can always trigger it off in the task manager of the ACP) so its really not needed. just set a password so you can login to the vbseo_sitemap/ folder with the reports.

b) those are all new to vb3.6, and the instructions were written for vb3.5.4. you can put anything in var name and log phrase... vbseositemap will probably be good. product, you want vbulletin sitemap generator, as thats the product that the task is associated with.

Sitemap files are physically stored in vbseo_sitemap/data/ folder, but you should access them via http://yourforumsroot/sitemap_index.xml.gz URLs (it is possible with mod_rewrite rules included in vBSEO's .htaccess file).

I've been using Google sitemaps for months. Should I remove the sitemap and leave it up to the software to ping Google?

You can add your http://yourforumsroot/sitemap_index.xml.gz sitemap into google webmaster account.
