Using FTP, go into your vbseo_sitemap/data directory and make sure you only have 1-5 listed. If others are there, remove them.

Did you ever run sitemap with a very low number of URLs per file perhaps, and it created a lot of sitemaps?

yes, when i first install the sitemap generator couple of months ago i set the max urls to 40,000 (or maybe 40.000 ) and ran the script once with that settings.
many sitemaps were generted and google is still looking for them.
Any solutions ?

40.000 would have done it, since it would have interpreted that as 40, and created a lot of sitemaps.

As long as the extra ones no longer exist, Google will get caught up eventually. Just give it time.
