That error is normally seen if when google visited your site the XML file wasn't available so it redirected to the homepage (as per the 404 setting)...

Try resubmitting the sitemap now that it is there (google may have visited while you were regenerating the sitemap) and that error should go away... If not you could do some test from the WMT labs section that lets you view the sitemap as the google bot see if maybe it is actually still getting redirected and if so will need to look into that issue.

submitted it again and the red box popped up right away

according to the labs, the sitemap is fine

I don't understand what you mean there, but yes the sitemap has loaded fine for me the whole time.
I've disabled and removed the plugin for now, will try again this weekend, that should give it 4-5 days to hopefully clear out in WMT

That was just a mistype.

If the sitemap file is loading correct on your browser , then everything is correct within the sitemap file. If it is still not loading correct you should contact your host and make sure they don't block any google ip.
