htaccess trouble

I'm running 3.1 vbseo. I just upgraded to the latest PHP and I was getting white pages and some of my templates were messed up. I then cleared the htaccess file and all is good but now my vbseo is useless without it.
What do I put in my htaccess to work with the latest PHP?

it might not be htaccess related at all.

re-enable the htaccess file, and try addding the custom doc root as outlined here.
