I've already done that and I'm still getting 'We encountered an error while trying to access your Sitemap. Please ensure that your Sitemap follows our guidelines and can be accessed at the location which you provided and then resubmit.'

Starting to get get quite a few Timed out (23) and Unreachable (9) errors.

This is how my .htaccess file looks.

    RewriteEngine On
    RewriteBase /

    #RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !^www\.canon-fodder-forums\.com
    #RewriteRule (.*) http://www.canon-fodder-forums.com/$1 [L,R=301]

    RewriteRule ^((urllist|sitemap_).*\.(xml|txt)(\.gz)?)$ vbseo_sitemap/vbseo_getsitemap.php?sitemap=$1 [L]

    RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} !(admincp/|modcp/|cron|vbseo_sitemap)
    RewriteRule ^((archive/)?(.*\.php(/.*)?))$ vbseo.php [L,QSA]

    RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
    RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
    RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !/(admincp|modcp|clientscript|cpstyles|images)/
    RewriteRule ^(.+)$ vbseo.php [L,QSA]

Also your sitemap loads fine and I download it : http://www.canon-fodder-forums.com/sitemap_index.xml.gz
Make sure you have add the correct sitemap URL and Google should accept it after resubmit the sitemap again

Google has started to visit the forum again after I added the sitemap_1.xml.gz file yesterday, it wouldn't take the index file at all.
So things are slowly getting back to normal.

Thanks for all your help guys, really appreciated.
