Google 5xx error

When I submit my site map to google I get:

5xx error in Sitemap http://www.trackshare.com/forum/sitemap_1.xml.gz

When I browse to the site map and view it I get:

XML Parsing Error: not well-formed
Location: http://www.trackshare.com/forum/sitemap_index.xml.gz
Line Number 1, Column 1:�
^

I'm not sure what else to try??

I have the follwoing in me .htaccess file:

RewriteEngine On
RewriteRule ^(sitemap.*\.(xml|txt)(\.gz)?)$ vbseo_sitemap/vbseo_getsitemap.php?sitemap=$1 [L]
#AcceptPathInfo On
php_value max_upload_filesize 20M
