update: the problem has been resolved - it was related to a restrictions of php safe_mode, which disallows to create file in a folder owned by different userid. To fix this, I simply removed data/hits/ folder, re-created it manually via ftp and assigned 0777 permissions. SE bots logging is working fine now.
