What the heck is vBSEO?

I'm starting to figure out some things about this software, but I can't seem to find the basic information which is frustrating.

1. What is vBSEO? (Server software? Add on to vBulletin? Stand alone software?)

2. What does it do? (Handles dynamic versus static URLs for search bots? Is it a fancy Mod-ReWrite? Etc. What about Site Maps?)

3. Why couldn't I just write a decent Mod_ReWrite to drop in my HTACCESS file and do the same thing?

Maybe I just can't find this information, but it seems to me adding a simple "this is what this does and why you need it" paragraph to the home page would be very useful.

Nope. I mean like just what I said. I simple paragraph on the home page that I don't have to go looking for and that answers those few simple questions up front.
