Is it possible to use VBSEO without breaking one or the other? Or do I HAVE to move one directory?

You will need to use a separate directory if you use permalinks for WP as both operate on a 'catch-all -> script' functionality in the htaccess

no way to do this on the same directory?
It may be possible, but you would need to code your own pre-processor, somehow determine if said content is a wp script or a vb (this will be the hard part), and then include/redirect to each scripts processor.
It won't at all be supported and you are on your own if you chose to go down this route.
