    VB 3.7.2 PL2 Mods, Add-ons and hacks compatibility?

    Him i am currently setting up a forum and i am adding all the things i think i may need, i have added VBAdvanced cmps (supported mod), Donations system (supported mod) and Links/downloads manager (supported mod) and i am using the VB 3.7.2 PL2 and will upgrade to 3.7.3 when it comes out later this week!

    Can you tell me would there be any compatibility issues with the above and VBSeo?, my forum is currently accessed via a webpage to the VBA cmps.

    vBSEO should be fully compatible with all of those mods listed.

    vBSEO is extremely easy to install. Upload the files, and import the product and vuala.

    As long as you have mod_rewrite enabled then it should allow the sitemap and vBSEO. Does your host have the mod_rewrite enabled? If not can they enable it for you?

    I am a novice so i have no idea what that means, the below is directly from their website:

    Yes, for a number of reasons certain scripts and types of script are banned. The installation, hosting or use of any of the following scripts on our shared hosting packages is stricly prohibited for reasons related to server stability and security.
    • phpSitemapNG - Google sitemap creator
    • UltimateBBS / UBB -IkonBoard
    • All versions of YABB forum
    • CGI-Proxy, Anonymizer and all other Proxy scripts
    • IRC related scripts
    • Chat room applications (not including 100% applet based)
    • phpShell and all other command execution scripts
    • Webmail and eGallery modules of PHP-Nuke -'Matts' FormMail
    Any accounts found using any of these scripts will be suspended WITHOUT warning or will have the script removed without warning. Simply not being aware of this is NOT acceptable as it is every clients responsibility to ensure they check our knowledgebase or ask questions if not sure.

    That is not the vBSEO Sitemap generator, it is for phpSitemapNG. I would contact your host and ask them if they have the mod_rewrite enabled.

    NEVER let your host dictate what you can and can not do.

    There's 12315424323421445432423 other hosting providers out there who don't.

    Hey Brian

    I'll assume your not a server admin, but it is perfectly acceptable for any hosting company to dictate what scripts they want to ban on shared servers.

    Sadly, there are many scripts out there that are just so badly written, nobody in there right mind would allow them on shared servers, and thus, we dont allow them either.

    Its nice to see that you have obviously taken the time to read this thread properly, and have responded in such a way that is not even relevant to the thread?

    We havent said at all, in any way shape or form what the customer can or cannot do, so dont go jumping on the "leave them" bandwagon.

    Simon was simply un-sure about the VBseo software, and thought that the "phpSitemapNG - Google sitemap creator" meant any sitemap generator, which, he did make clear that he is new to this stuff.

    Simon did however ask us, and we happily confirmed that the VBseo sitemap creator is fine on all of our shared hosting, and is obviously very well written because when we run it nightly ourselves on a 2500+ member forum, the server it runs on doesnt even notice its running.

    This is also why we really dont like people posting questions about our services on third party websites because people are all to quick to make "assumtions" without facts, yet nobody even bothers to tell us that they are talking about us behind our backs.

    Like Michael said, if your not sure, "Ask the hosting company"

    I would even go so far as to ask a moderator to remove your comment as its "un-fair" and off topic. Several of us here have seen it, and are not happy about it.

    I kindly disagree entirely.

    Regardless of how poor the script is written, if you are going to Sell me a package based on Xgb of space and X gb of bandwidth, and make NO mention of cpu cycles/ram usage, then you have no right to dictate what i can or cannot run, provided i'm under my space and under my bandwidth alotment that I purchased.

    I see NOTHING relating to limits of ram gurateed, ram burst, or cpu cycles per min on your website packages and plans page for shared hosting:
    UK Web Hosting - PHP5 Web Hosting - PHP5 and MySQL / MySQLi - PHP5 with XSLT Web Hosting

    False advertising?

    Shared hosting is simply oversold for pure profit and nothing more. Whne one person starts using resources, the host shuts their site off/takes other action that basically says 'you can't do this any more'. I will NEVER agree with that.

    There are PLENTY of shared hosts out there that don't dictate and don't oversell, or clearly make what cycles and burst is availble to you, and are still reasonbly priced.

    the only thing i will agree with dictaing is content. Adult, torrents, and forth. But, unlike ram use and cpu cycles, it's usually pretty clear if you can or cannot run those things from sign-up.

    phpShell and all other command execution scripts
    You do realize that this bans vBulletin then, right?

    from includes/functions.php
    Code:
    // #############################################################################
    /**
    * Updates the LoadAverage DataStore
    */

    function update_loadavg()
    {
        global $vbulletin;

        if (!isset($vbulletin->loadcache))
        {
            $vbulletin->loadcache = array();
        }

        if ($stats = @exec('uptime 2>&1') AND trim($stats) != '' AND preg_match('#: ([\d.,]+),?\s+([\d.,]+),?\s+([\d.,]+)$#', $stats, $regs))
        {
            $vbulletin->loadcache['loadavg'] = $regs[2];
        }

    //trimmed the rest
    Calling exec initiates command line-like queries. There's plenty more instances like this too.

    I appreciate that you're only sticking up for yourself, and that I never pointed a finger saying you were a bad host. I simply suggested that he, especially being new to hosting, doesn't get cought up in a HostGator-esque situation where they'll sell you anything, and then randomly shut off your site for 12 hours before their support will get back to you.

    I would even go so far as to ask a moderator to remove your comment as its "un-fair" and off topic. Several of us here have seen it, and are not happy about it.
    If a moderator sees fit to do so, so be it.

    I don't think my comments were unfair at all.

    Hey guys!, this was a fact finding thread that is quickly making me go off the idea of installing VBSEO, i never wanted to start an argument!

    Briansol, there are somethings that as a newbie are far more important at this stage than how my host will run my server time should my bandwith hit its limit too quick - and thats customer service, it's true to say this is my first ever host so i don't have anything to compare it to other than other customer relations/services from other industies - WESH have been second to none in their customer services, i really have no idea what i am doing and do cause many problems for myself and WESH, firstly when starting out Richard himself was very helpful and took the time to explain their set up and services, after this i took on their services and have been peppering their helpdesk on a daily basis, always receiving the help i need and always within an hour of me submitting a ticket!

    This level of service is so important at the moment, when i get more experienced and get traffic through my site i'm sure i can expand with WESH, i do understand that there are many many more hosting companies out there, and thats probably detremental to the newbie like me as its a mine field!

    As for the sell you anything comment, i was asking for information at another site before buying my domain and hosting, i had plenty of advice and help from Richard there i was asking questions about hosts that i had found offering the earth for no money, i was given unbiased help and information, i didn't even know that he belonged to a hosting company, it was I who asked him about his services.

    I owe WESH no loyalty at all, the above is written purely on experience, if only all online services ran ths way.

    I hope this puts this "Heated" debate to bed so we can get on with more serious things like getting my site up, running and plenty of traffic!

    Regards,
    Simon

    Simon,
    I hold no grudges on either party. I'm glad they have been helpful to you in getting you set up.

    My interest here is that as a potential vbseo customer, I don't want to see you in 2 or 3 weeks posting threads like these:
    My site has been shut down TWICE!!!!
    Forum down due to SEO load
    Host gator just suspened my account

    because of a bad hosting situation.

    My intentions are good, I promise.

    I side with no one, neither you as a potential customer nor my host as i said i owe them no loyalty (yet) it's just that it seemed (because text is emotive) a little aggressive toward a provider that has been exemplary up to now. I do thank you for your concern and information and should i experience something like those posts then naturally i would have to query my position. Judging by Richards & WESH' help i don't expect to be dissapointed.

    Regards,
    Simon
