Technical presales questions - What changes occur and how to monitor?

I'm looking for some of the features that you provide in vbSEO so that's why I'm here in the first place.

vb 4.1.5 w/ common plug-ins and some that are being custom developed
600,000 posts
50,000 members
1000 blog entries
40,000 attachments
up to 300 users on the 900 sec load
I've been using the Basic Friendly URLs since they came out

So I just realized that 1/3 of my indexed pages in Google are going to the archive pages, not good. I have 301d those from my server today, but I started thinking about what else I needed and I cam back to vbSEO to check it out and I like the list.

I need to know what happens at a technical level for some of these features, and how does the system handle the migration from one methodology to another.

Rewrites, URL changes and 301's. How does this work? I install vbSEO and it's up and running, does it do the 301s for me and rewrite the URLS right out of the box? Does it run a script? What happens?

Permalinks for all of the types. What do these do again? Google has all of these cached for the users.

"Directory" URL STRUCTURE! I need this, please tell me more. I wasn't sure this was possible and I've tried to do it on my own and gave up. I'm assuming that your tool will put content into /directories/subdirectories/content ??

Homepage Alias - I've been trying to do this with server-side code and vB keeps changing things so I gave up. Explain now it works with CMS.

Canonicals - Explain your canonical tag system? Where and when?

"Normal" vb urls are automatically 301'ed to the new vbseo urls you chose.
'basic' friendly urls require a rewrite rule added to the htaccess file:
Redirect VB4 Basic Friendly URL's to VBSEO

Everything happens real-time as it is requested by a user/bot. There effectively isn't a migration at all.

Permalinks are just static urls to a given resource.

Directory structure is just that /folder/ setup instead of page.ext style, if desired. There are presets for both versions, and both with and without forum heirarchy (ie, this is forum 55 and you can tell easily from the url) with Id's and or just title (forums only, threads require IDS)


Alias takes a dupe url, like
/
/index.php
that load the same thing and make it just
/
for both resources

Canonical is automatic. It's either on or off and written to the page source. You can view source this page to see how it works.

ok, so I've got 200,000 posts indexed in Google, if the URL changes from the already existing friendly URL, how does vbSEO manage the 301 from that page to the new page?

My threads look like the example I have below. What exactly does vbSEO do to the output and how does vbSEO handle the 301 redirection from the already existing and cached URL to the new URL. Also what will the new URL look like?

existing url: website.com/forum/showthread.php?12345-post-keywords-go-here&p=123456

will the new url look like this? website.com/forum/f55/post-keywords-go-here-12345

You will need to add code in your .htaccess to 301 redirect your existing urls to vBSEO format.

ok, just a formula that covers threads, posts and forum views? The genesis for this conversation is something that just hit my like a 5000 lb heavy thing yesterday and I can't for the life of me understand how I missed such a major error. I just made some changes that have already given me the biggest day ever in the history of my 6 year old site. wow, not to have addressed this years ago was a huge mistake.

About the permalinks. Can I get a couple of examples of the changes and how the 301 is made between the old and new URLs.

For the forum directory struction, can I have an alias for the forum name? How many directories are available (not the same question as what's the most that I should have, just curious how many I can have that are nested)

I actually advise to turn of vBulletin Archive when you have vBSEO installed as it only creates duplicate content for forumdisplay pages.

yeah, but I had 67,000 indexed pages in Google that went to mysite.com/forum/archive ... Not sure how that ballooned so quickly, but that was a shock to my system yesterday when I saw that. So I 301ed all of the ./forum/archive/index.php/f- and ~/t- to the forum and topic structure in the friendly url rewrite. Hopefully Google will clean that up over the next few weeks.

If you just recently handled that , i strongly advise you to install vBSEO asap and redirect those URLS to vBSEO'd format

any response to the other issues? I have to understand the technicals to what is being done before I make a move. The "just trust us, everyone else does" argument isn't good enough for me. :-)

yeah, i used to be in software, not trying to be a pain, but I know a thing or two about seo and trying to see if you can save me time and hassle. I need technical answers and not a "just trust us - we've been in business for 7 years so we know what we're doing" type of an answer. (That's a logical fallacy of presumption)
