I recommend
installing in root .com if your site is a forum or you plan to power it with the vb engine
installing in /forum if your forum supports your content site that is in root (ie, a product line with a community tech/support/etc forum)
installing in subdomain.site.com if your forum is completely unrelated to the main .com
