Hey, I was wondering if there were any restrictions on how visible the branding needed to be. For example: would something like what this website has, with the light text on light background and changing the URL, be acceptable?

Hi Phil,
This is the relevant section of the License Agreement:
Changing the URL would fall into the 'Modify' camp.Modify and/or remove any copyright notices or labels that vBSEO places on each page of your vBulletin™ forums without permission.

If that is the case then the statement and link at the bottom of this page is misleading:

Sure,
The page I posted above blatantly states:
"Note: If you do not purchase the vBSEO branding removal option, you can also choose a different version of the copyright to display (some linked and some unlinked). For information see here:"
Thus seemingly suggesting that the link on the footer is not required. Also the link on the footer on that pages directs to:
Changing or Un-linking Your vBSEO Copyright Notice
Which is an old post discussing that the link is NOT required and that you have options as to what you want the footer to display. I know the copyright info is required- but these posts make it seem as if an ACTIVE link is not.
"Unlinked" refers to an LINK back to vbseo.com. It clearly states that the link must "display".
The options are:
1) display with link (included in license)
2) display with no link (included in license)
3) branding free (no copyright display) (Additional Cost)

Oh,
Thanks for clearing that upI was just confused by the initial poster I guess. I don't see what is wrong with changing the link if you would have allowed him to remove the link. But I understand now!
