You should always start with on page seo, because if nothing can be crawled, all the ranking in the world is not going to help you is it.

So make sure you have good content related to your niche and then make it crawlable. Getting backlinks takes time, you can't wait for that, you should always look out for backlinks, but it's not your priority. Your priority is content, then making sure crawlers can find it, then backlinks to that content will follow because users will link to your site and then you get in the SERPs with high ranking.

Believe me this is how it works, not the other way around. Even if you can buy a good link to your site, if your site can't be crawled and/or has nothing to offer, this link is useless to visitors and crawlers.

So its really vbseo before PR, well for new sites anyway

You should vBSEO-enable your forum as soon as possible.

There are various aspects to SEO. PageRank is among them, of course.

However, PageRank contribution to high rankings is not as highly influencial as it used to be. Popular opinion is now that PageRank helps to get Google to increase its rate of crawling, and deeper indexing (still very important aspects of the total SEO process).

vBSEO forums distribute PageRank more consistently and effectively. As such, vBSEO forums always tend to have higher PageRank than non-vBSEO forums.

You should of course, do your best to build backlinks to your forum.

Confirming the above responses, there is absolutely no reason to wait on installing vBSEO. The sooner, the better.

Page rank is HIGHLY over-rated IMO.

My home page is a pr2 (main index of forums).
most of my forumdisplay pages are pr3-5.
most of my threads are pr0.

some of my threads that have made it onto digg/netscape/etc have pr5+ for that particular page... but the traffic to them is near meaningless after the initial "bump" in traffic from the day of the link.

conversely, according to google analytics, my forumhome receives nearly 3x the traffic of any particular forumdisplay, yet it's PR is half that of some forumdisplay/threads.

    So really, its over-rated.

and you'll be waiting on google to re-PR the web, which could most likely be months (they only do it like 4 times a year).

    Install vbseo today.
    Ignore pagerank.

that's my opinion, and i'm sticking to it

    IMO, don't waste your money.

Unless the link will bring you TRAFFIC, it's not worth buying.

I would be very careful about buying links for anything other than what Brian said, bringing you traffic.

If you are doing it for the purpose of building pagerank and gaining backlinks, it is a waste of time. It was a good idea a couple years ago, but no longer worthwhile, at least I don't feel it is.

are you saying that getting backlinks to get good/high pagerank is a waste of time. are you saying that it is irrelevant to Search Engine Optimization.

You might want to be careful where buying links. Ensure that the links you get do not have rel=nofollow applied, are placed on sites relevant to your content only (that do not have non-relevant links on them), and get suitable anchor text.

Building backlinks is important. PageRank is also valuable, although the visible Google PageRank in the toolbar is not fully representative of the measures they keep in their internal database. In fact it is only updated a few times per year.

And, of course, any link can be helpful if it delivers targeted click-through traffic.

    IMO, yes.

I literally have thousands (maybe even 10's of thousands) of threads for which I rank number 1 for various terms. So much so, that over 75% of my daily traffic comes from google.

As stated above, the majority (all but a few) of these threads are all PR0, with probably 0 back links on them, especially if they are a new topic, and my pr2 homepage that gets 5k uniques a day.

It's a bunch of BS IMO.

    dani web, Pr7, right?

Brent's month-old site, PR0 beats her pr7 site in a query against her user name.

    cscgal - Google Search

Page rank- a lot of hot air IMO.

I have to agree, my ranking is mostly from free links. But buying a few quality links isn't bad, if you have some extra money in the bank.
