Having everything on root folder is the best option.

If you are using vBA as your home page, I don't think it really matters one way or another if the forum is located in the root folder or a sub-folder (one way, the forumhome is a folder, the other way it is a filename). What will matter is the internal link structure of the site.
I have a couple of forums with vBA and vBSEO and I prefer to keep the forums in a folder/directory off of the root - it's more consistent with the rest of my site structure. I'm finding that the search engines are having no problems giving the forum threads plenty of love.![]()
I'm using vbSEO for my precious metals forum.
