ok i think i got it now.
another question: in my old htaccess i would 301 domain.com to www.domain.com - vbseo does not seem to do that??? or does it?

It has that in the .htaccess file also. There are two lines near the top that are commented out. Edit it to have your domain name, and remove the # in front to uncomment.
