Hey brian, which plan should I choose on a small orange, and give me a average on how much posts/members I could hold for each plan.
for the personel VPS program i pay $50 per month
this is enough to handle my forum of 2800 users of which 1000 are active users
with an average post per day of 150 - 200
on average i have about 20 to 30 users online at once at peak times 50 - 60
18700 threads and 250000 posts and things run very smoothly..
:wacky:
How can you earn enough to cover your monthly fees? I' can't PM anyone because I don't think I can. But thats not that much members, why VPS already?
in regards to the few members.. i have a habit of CULLING inactive members
anyone who has been a user on the site and has no posts and has been inactive for 1 year gets deleted. un culled the number is 8000+
VPS saves me the hassle of shared hosting.. being stuck on a server with 100+ other sites jockeying for server time.. the costs of the VPS are covered by Adsense. the other programs i have adsdaq and EPN make the profit..
for me my forum is a labor of love im not doing it to make money, but i not going to say no to it either if it comes in by itself..
I think you have to sit back and look at creating your forum and doing something that will provide usefull information to your userbase and then once you have done that you can keep moving to the direction of improving your income..
thats just my 2 cents.

ASmallOrange doesn't seem that good all though i switched to Byethost.
The VPS your using gives 150 GB Bandwidth + 15 GB storage (50$ a month)
Compare that to Byethosts Premium Plan - they have 250 GB bandwidth and unlimited disk space. (35$ a YEAR)
Premium Hosting
They don't look overselling to me as they're reliable.
we have been with ASO for 3 years. and have not experienced any problems down time has been almost non existent the tech support staff has been knowledgable and helpful. and they come well recommended by the VB forums community.
up to now they serve my forums needs just fine. for me to move things over to somewhere else for big bandwidth numbers and storage space i dont need or wont use for the foreseeable future seems silly. the extra $15 im paying to me is piece of mind for a service that is up 99.999% of the time without issues. then pay 15$ less and have my forum experiencing lags and downtime issues..
of course like in everything your mileage may vary.
:wacky:
But why would people use it if they offer that much less and a resller plan offers the same?
There are CERTAINLY far more hosts that are good then what i outlined in my post. Those, however, I have experience with from past service.
bandwidth is totally upsold in terms of making something look better. unless you're streaming videos or serving massive files, 250gb of bandwidth is an absurd figure on a shared host.
My 1.2 million post forum uses about 5gb of b/w a day, or 150gb a month.
There is NO WAY my site would run on that small host package. The server would melt in an hour. So, take bandwidth figures with a grain of salt.
I really don't understand, how can you possibly put that and NOT give what they say?
$35 dollars a year is to good to be true.. its shared hosting. its a crap shoot..
you could be put on a server with 100 parked domains and your laughing.. or.. you could be stuck on the server with the guy that has the major bandwidth needs and then.. your forum will be paying the price..
it boils down to what your comfortable with, some people like hoping from host to host to have the best deal value for money and not worry about the what ifs. others myself included like to have less things to worry about host it set it forget about it.
there is no right or wrong way..
you will have to do what you feel is best for you. im doing what i think is best for me there are no right or wrong ways just different ways..
:wacky:
But how? You can LIE about your hosting packages and how much you offer?
