Editing topics: Impact on URLS and SEO?

    Hi,

One of my main concerns is this. On my forum posters are lazy and post short or irrevelant topic titles to the actual post subject some times. I frequently go through the board editing these to make things easier for forum users to see post that interest them and for SEO purposes.

My question is this, if a user posts a topic e.g. forum/paintballing.html

And I read the post and edit it to forum/where-to-paintball-in-ireland.html

    1. Will vbseo create two different static urls for this?
    2. What happens to the older one?
    3. If two static urls are created, will google see this as dublicate content and penalise me?
    4. Will vbseo automatically use 301 to direct the old to the new?
    5. What happens if I constantly edit the title of a post... for example progress updates or attendance numbers? With dynamic urls I currently, this is not a problem... well It doe not seem to be as I have great results in google usually.

Sorry for all the questions, but I like to be sure before I but

If you include the threadid in your url so it would be mysite.com/paintball-1234.html, when you rename it, it will be mysite.com/paintball-in-ireland-1234.html. It will be automatically 301ed.

Do I include the id or does vbseo do that? I just edit as normally?

    vBSEO will include that.

Look at this URL here: Editing topics: Impact on URLS and SEO?

The ending number is the thread id. You can choose to include/exclude that if you wish though. We recommend that you keep the ID to avoid duplicate URLs (Someone names a thread the same thing as another thread).

Clarification: vBSEO includes various presets, and all of them include ID's for threads.

In short, if you use any of the vBSEO URL rewrite presets (and you should), when renaming a thread, visitors (users and spiders) will get 301 redirected to the new location.

If you rename a lot of threads, the best bet is to probably not use titles in the url format at all.

similar, to how this forum is "f55" and not "/presales-questions-55"

...and vBSEO has 2 presets that do not use keywords in urls: MustangEvolution.com and DaniWeb.com type URLs.
