/forums (or another folder name) vb4 install

Puts the CMS in root, outside of your forums folder, with no /content/ redirect and your forums remain in their subfolder as always.
I just followed these directions and put my cms in the root. It is working!!! Except one minor thing the house icon in the breadcrumb links to the forum and not the cms home. I have been trying and trying to figure it out but perhaps someone more knowledge can give my some insight on this.

It should automatically link to the cms home in the cms and the forum home from forum pages. Is this not what you are seeing?

It doesn't seem like you performed the steps correctly as it still links to /content from the forum instead of /.

Make sure your http://domain.com/ is in the correct box.
    CMS Home

CMS domain is NOT the correct spot to enter this. That should be left blank.

Your last post was correct and I made the change. It didn't seem to fix the problem though.
    Thanks,

it seems to be working as described on your site now.

cms artiles take you to cms home
forum articles take you to forum home.

off topic, but you should consider removing that tab mod. it's ruining your SEO.

For step 6: What would be the rewrite rules for a subdomain like forums.domain.com?

    Hiya,

Just installed and set up VBSEO.
I'm running the forums in /forum/ and the CMS at root as per your instructions here.

One thing i've noticed though is that all of the articles and sections still carry /forum/content/blahedeblah in the URL. Is this meant to be the way it runs or am I likely to have missed something within the setup ??

I've re-run through the steps and everything seems as it should have been done.

I also have the same issue as claystation reported earlier (and is still in effect on their site).

The breadcrumbs within the CMS section (and the forum) have the link for the house/home icon pointing to the forum root rather than the site/CMS root.

Examples of the /forum/content/ urls are here :-
Rods 'n' Sods - Welcome to Rods 'n' Sods Mk2

And examples of the home/house icon can be seen here :-
Rods 'n' Sods - Site Root
Rods 'n' Sods - Forums Root

This only moves the 'home page' to root. All the rest of the pages will operate in the normal place, /forums/content/xxxxx. IF you want the artciles in root, you will need to move your vb install to root as well.

Regarding the 'house' icon, make sure you entered the CMS home url into the correct blank, CMS Home. NOT in CMS domain.

    Hi Brian,

    Thanks for the reply.

Yes, the setting is in the right location (CMS Home)

For reference, i've tried it both with and without the trailing slash.

For the CMS in root, vBulletin provide a solution to running the CMS and contained articles within root whilst not requiring the /forum/ in the url --> vBulletin Manual

Can't VBSEO work with this setup ?
If it can, do you have any advice for the settings that would need to be changed ?

    Thanks.

I personally have not tried that. You can try and see if it works.

I set it up originally like that and it worked a treat bar an issue with the stylesheet not rendering properly in IE.

However, I wanted to move to VBSEO for it's features/rewrites etc. and was under the impression that it could also handle the CMS as a whole in root not just the index page. I didn't realise before I bought it that it only really handled faking the "forums" as a subfolder.

I have to admit, i'm fairly clueless when it comes to the rewrites. Do you have any advice on what i'd need to change to get it to rewrite the SEO'd URLs if I set the site back up to run with CMS fully in root ?

IMO, you're doing this all backwards. There's no point in having a /forum directory just to have everything run from root.

I would highly suggest migrating your vb install to root, delete the /forum directory, and then if you want /forums/ as part of your forum URLs, add forums/ into the forum urls in the CP.
