vB4 and vBSEO 3.5 Upcoming Release Notes

thank you much for your consideration on this, getting something for vBSeo to work on the vBulletin 4 betas.

can only speak for myself, and would be happy with something to keep the internal links alive and working, and have a lot of them.
-> dont' expect the world, or even anything new in place -
-> even if a lot of the "eXtra" options, next - previous changes, even link and track backs dont' work can live with.

working with styles and a possible 2 months of no demos :(

Same here.

I just upgraded to 4b3 on a dummy server.
None of the old hacks or templates work.

As expected. Just about nothing will port over. The template calls are different, your skin will need to be re-coded, the hooks are different, etc.

I would highly suggest not upgrading any production site to vb4 beta yet, regardless of vbseo. There's a ton of bugs in it still.

I was surprised that the technology of some of my products does work. Only the template system must be taken care of.

I'd be very happy if a vbseo 3.5 beta would come public.

Well... I'm upgrading the production site

Of course I have a staff of 3 people doing full time migrating our plugins, redoing templates and doing micro-optimizations and performance tests. So far we haven't found anything major. Although the bootstrap changes to the code are interesting.

I'd say do not upgrade unless doing what you are up to

vbseo is in my list of things to test .. seems like I added a "blocker" to my architecture. I can't upgrade without vbseo on the risk of breaking some thousand links. I still don't like it but it was expected

I have a testvb that I am playing with, came dangerously close to running the Upgrade against my main database when I uploaded the old config.php into the new /includes/ folder.

Luckily I have done similar things so many times in the past that I have an automatic 'check to see if you are going to destroy anything' protocol burned into my brain.

Unfortunately, as I dont want to lose my indexed links, I can't go further just yet.

So very tempting to just upgrade the main site.. it has too many wasted addons that I plan to remove anyway.

What I still don't understand is why the vBulletin url patterns went the way they did. They use the thread title at the url... but as a parameter on the showthread. It is as if they put the minimum effort possible in doing that.

in HTTP this is as good as optional parameters. It isn't even considered inside the path info..

It's even worse because there is no actual parameter. There is no t=something, just a string there. That's as good as a hashed link for parsing and using ... I hate that

Unless, of course, I am missing something and query string parameters are now high ranked vs. a real path in the url. Point is that, the urban legend (maybe no longer true) was that search engine disregarded parameters in the url or at least look bad at them. I haven't really played with the mod rewrite option for urls in vb4 (mostly because I plan on using vbseo) but they are using the basic ones at the vb site, and those are not true urls, just a clever use of the parameters.

The current vBSEO 3.3.2 will NOT work on vb4. don't try it. bad things will happen.

From the start, vB had NO plans to release a public beta. Then, they did so without notice. Further, it has been all of 48 hours since the CMS was released to the public for the first time. Simply put, our software is not ready for release at this time- beta or not. Pressing the issue is not going to change those facts.

As stated now in triplicate, an official announcement with further details regarding vBSEO 3.5 is coming shortly. It is written and awaiting final proof read/correctness before publishing.

From all the important vbseo improvements for us betatesters the more or less simple url rewriting tools are of most concern. Most important thing is just that the old urls work from showthread and forumdisplay. The other seo tools are highly important but we can just only get our boards live when the urls are done by vbseo.

Thanks anyway for programming the update to vbulletin 4 (vbseo 3.5), it seems to be lots of work and it is greatly appreciated!

I am shocked that people are wanting to update to vb4 beta 3 on their live site. At least wait for another beta or two while you test things out in a test board. (Gold ideally tho)

I see people writing it is for business etc. but why is having vb4 up now more important then having vb3 up now and waiting another month or two until vb4 goes gold? Am I missing something o_O

Matt, I fully agree. I'm usually the LAST person to upgrade (heh, i'm still on 3.7). Let everyone else be the guinea pig and spend time patching and updating to .1 and .2 quickly.
