Question What VPS package would you recommend?

Our forum is averaging 5000+ visitors/day, 100,000+ pageviews/day, 350,000+ hits/day, 2+ GB bandwidth/day. Our current shared server webhost disabled our vbseo.php script due to overusage of server load which causes service outages.

Can a Virtual Private Server accommodate our site well? What VPS specs should we look for?

No VPS. I think you need a dedicated server.

With stats like that I would look into a dedicated server. I'd recommend a Dual Opteron from Softlayer.

Our site is a non-profitable site and is 7 months old only. We cant afford a 75$+ per month hosting right now.

I don't know what to tell you. If it is the site in your profile then it's going to put stress on a server and you will be hard pressed to find shared hosting that will keep you around with those stats.

You could get away with VPS for awhile but it will still be pushing it. I'd take a look at ServInt Internet Services - Managed Dedicated Server & VPS Provider and look at their cheapest VPS. That may hold you over.

i'd also suggest that a VPS is not what you want. with that kind of traffic, you're going to need a serious workhorse....

not for profit doesn't mean "can't raise money".

have a server fund donation drive, or a raffle or something...

I suggest trying to get some members to help out by contributing to a server fund. Looks like you have a great member base there. A fiver here and a tenner there will soon add up to enough to pay your server bill. Good luck!

My question would be when do you decide to make that move from shared to dedicated host? and what if your current host you are starting out with doesnt offer dedicated or vps hosting? After reading this, I checked out what my host offers, and the max they can go up to is 45gb monthly bandwith. I checked and 210 different sites share the ip addy. The numbers we expect will put a strain on that pretty shortly.

I moved from a shared host to a VPS it was horrible for me I had about a 2week downtime because my shared host was also hosting my domain name. While transfering them name they would continually give me the wrong passwords to trasnfer it over. I finally just allowed them to change over the IP address for the domain name.

I now host all my domain names on godaddy and since haven't had a problem switching anything over.

I had same problem when trying to move over a couple domains to godaddy, the company I think just hates when people do this so they make things hard!
