What is the right chat software to choose?

I'm thinking about adding my own chat rooms ,not the ones based on other servers but my own chatserver.

I found a few options while searching for example:

    Digichat
    Realchat
    PHPOpenChat

Just looking at the prices, why are some packages so expensive while others are free/a lot cheaper? Any help is appreciated

I'm not sure about those chat softwares because they aren't that much good. I believe FlashChat and JavaChat are the best for vBulletin sites. But hey, I'll be making a huge chat room system that is integrated with vBulletin with many features and additions. It's all created with AJAX technology so there's no need to have any flash/java/etc programs to run the chat.

flashchat has worked great for me. There have been issues with the software being exploited, but it seems to be addressed quickly. Can't complain for a $5.00 script.

I wouldn't mind paying more money for something more secure though.

DigiChat is worth if you are looking over more controls for your chat room.

Sounds great, do you have an estimate about the release date?

No release date has been set yet but I guarantee you that a beta release will be available anytime soon.
