It's much easier to block China, Vietnam and Nigeria at the server level. Speaking from experience, 99% of spam stopped by blocking those three. No one from those countries would possibly have any interest in my auto sites. There are too many legit users in Russia to block that country.

Then, to make sure new registrations go to this group and not the Registered Users group by default, i made a simple plugin to re-direct registrations to that group ID....

Here is a mod changing group registration:

    Hope it helps.

We should start a clan, seeing as we are the two in this thread who must be racist blocking complete countries. LOL

I am against banning whole country. I recommend to use cloudflare cdn hosting if you have such issues. It handles well with spammers.

It's hard to explain here but you can get more data from their web site Performance & Security for Any Website | CloudFlare (Private Beta) | Home you simply move your site to their dns and they take care with spammers

Has anyone good experience with Cloudflaire?
I already have a fast loading site, i think a proxy can slow down my site?
Is it really helping to secure the forum? Or is it bad for SEO?

It'll even more speed but you dont feel it other continent visitors will feel it. It's all about location of your visitors and your server location. I have alot of experience with cloudflare. I am one of pioneers for this cloudflare cdn hosting solution. It's really works and great. It's FREE. It's very good for seo because if google bot comes from usa CDN cloudflare serve your content at nearer place in usa so it much fastly index your site. If it comes from europe than european datacenter serve your content. And because your site is %100 time online you'll never be punished.
The fast CDN servers better than any standart hosting. And they help your site crawled fully and full performace. Spammers, botnets they al stopped at first dns level.

    Ok, thanks.
    I need to try it.

I already use amazon cloudfront and my server was 99,98 % online last year...
    That's not the problem.
Do you know where they have datacenters? Do they have a datacenter in Australia, South-Afrika or South-America ? I can't find it on there site.

They have 5 datacenters, 3 is in USA, 1 in europe and 1 in japan. They increase it in time. Cloudflare can cache css, js and pictures and keep botnets, xss and sql injection attacks and spammers away from reaching the content at first level amazon CDN does not do it. Also cloudflare is FREE and cloudflare is not 99.88 its exactly %100. There is difference at logic. You can also control caching method and usecloudflare only for a firewall. Also cloud has special software in PRO service, When the browser idle it loads the most used 200 elements of the site at the browser cache. Then next page the user move opens it lighten speed loads. You need to check advantages at cloudflare website.

I've added a test site to cloudflare and it looks like the nameservers are in the US.
I've contacted cloudflare if they can deliver nameservers in Europe, where most of my visitors come from. (waiting for the replay on the e-mail from cloudflare)
At this moment i'm not interested because of that.

edit: the nameservers are globally distributed.
    I'm gonna try it!

With 95% of my traffic being Australian, it concerns me pointing all dns info off-shore will have an effect on my AU Google serps. I think cloudflare is a great solution for globally distributed sites.

I've now enforced GEOIP blocking using mod_geoip. My site doesn't target many countries so blocking those that have no reason being there, is no loss of income to me.

    Cheers
