I agree with you, it's kind of chaotic. If there was a better way to easily track "topics that interest to you, per followed user", I think it would be more useful.

Tweetdeck is actually a really cool application. You can do a lot of things with it...like cancel out some of the noise you speak of

I'm running it, but I haven't fully explored it yet. Any tips on how to get the most out of it?

You know, I don't know what to say, because as much as I like it I still find myself going to twitter.com haha I also use powertwitter which has some of the useful things that tweetdeck has. Good thing about this is it shows shortened URL's in full length and where they go and also in line pictures and video. It also give you the options (popups) to shorten a URL or add a pic or video right there instead of going to another site! I think tweetdeck is kinda cumbersome at times, having that big extra window open (even with 2 screens) But I still leave it open

The way I have set up is so I have 4 columns (I think thats default) I have All friends then replies then I have a stock feed (stocktwits) then DM's.

It really does make it so much easier if you want to follow 1 person. You can set up a group. So say I want to set a group up for just VBSEO so I can always see just your tweets always, set that group up and your done!! This is also really nice if you follow a good amount of people..like what was said ealier, there sometimes is a lot of noisem this gets around that.

Things like that make it great!

There was a pretty good update to tweetdeck. Some nice things added, actually some things added were some of the items in powertwitter

I serioulsy don't get twitter. It actually annoys me that so many people love it. I just don't get it. I understand why so many people love facebook, I don't use it but I can see the value of it. But with twitter, it just seems silly and pointless.

I signed up and it is so weird and confusing. what am I supposed to do? (I even watched a 10 minute video on youtube and I feel no different then before)

We are now doing a trial of using Yammer (Twitter for the enterprise, or private group Twitter) here. We're using it ONLY for staff "updates" (not chat). The idea is to keep the entire vBSEO team up to date on what everyone else is working on, and so far it's been working very well for us since most of our staff are distributed.

Some of our affiliates have started using it to promote vBSEO. I'm sure that as Twitter search grows in popularity (maybe) or if they have vBulletin-niche followers, they may do well with this.

The key with Twitter is that you have to find an application for it that is going to deliver you some value. For instance, I'm not following anyone in particular, but I did add "Matt Cutts" and the "Web 2.0" conference to our list. Matt, in the midst of some not so useful stuff, also provides links to SEO related items during the day. So this is useful to us for tracking what he publishes and not so much tweeting ourselves. However, we'll be tweeting our announcements, promos, and other interesting stuff to anyone that is following us as well. It's a small but growing group.

Ashton Kutcher and CNN are battling it out to 1 Million followers now too. Maybe someone already won, but Twitter is really going to be getting a lot of media attention for quite some time and we'll see a growing # of 3rd party applications that search to find a way to use it to provide value. So it's a good idea just to keep an eye on it.

Any chance of getting 'tweet this' in with the social bookmarks now?
