Question To those who upgraded to VB4, would you do it again?

    Hi everyone,

I bought a vb license for a domain name and installed the software but never did anything with it. It pretty much got overrun by spam. I've recently become interested in rebooting it. I plan to wipe everything out and start over with a fresh vb install.

My options are to use VB 3.8.4 (it seems I can't use 3.8.6 because it was released after my license expired or something - it's not on the drop down list as an option for download) or buy a VB4 license and use VB4 or 3.8.6.

My question to those of you who upgraded to VB4, would you do it again? Was it worth it? Did your members appreciate it or come to? To those of you who chose not to leave 3.x, why didn't you upgrade?

I can already download 3.8.4 for free as opposed to paying - ouch - $285 or $195. I am already fairly familiar with the way 3.x works and can modify it relatively easily. I have already found a 3.x compatible style I'd like to use for the site. I'm not an expert in the niche and don't have the time to become one, so the only thing I'd be posting to VB4's CMS if I went with VB4 is promoted forum posts.

On the other hand, I am afraid that if some kind of security flaw came out for 3.x in a year or two I'd be up the creek since IB will likely no longer support it then.

I would like to be able to simply go on using 3.8.4 because it would require zero additional investment of money or time. That said, I don't want to take the easy way out and pay for it later.

    What does everyone think?

I just noticed that I can get the "3 month maintenance window" to upgrade from 3.8.4 to 3.8.6. Does anyone know if it's worth it if I decide to stick with the 3.X series?

    Hi Johnny,

I am one of the people who decided to upgrade his forum to vB 4. Why? We purchased this version before it came out, because I thought it was going to great. But when I saw it the first time, I was disappointed. It was - and still is - very buggy, there are no code standards anymore, the style doesn't look very well and is and the pages are loaded very slowly.

Okay, I had my vB 4 licenses and I waited until 4.0.4 was out, as the older versions were unacceptable for me.

vBulletin 4 is not fully developed till now and if I had the chance an other time, I would have stayed on vBulletin 3.8.4, because it is in my opinion the best vBulletin version which was ever released. An update to vB 4 I would take under consideration only when something like version 4.1.5 is released. At the moment I don't really recommend an update due to the fact that it doesn't bring many advantages with it. On the contrary.

    Regards,
    Fabio

I'm really pleased with VB4, had to fix lots of bugs and await a few releases but it's getting better

I would say use what you have now for free.

    load 3.8.x

You can always upgrade later. But, you can't downgrade (easily) from 4 to 3.
