Site name suffix or prefix

I have a site that has forums, videos, pictures ( a gallery ), biographies, discographies and articles. It's a classical / baroque music site so the name will have to be 'classical' or 'baroque' plus a pre- or suffix.

What term could I use as a pre- or suffix for a site with these features? ( I don't think 'forums' would be good enough, especially not since the majority of my visitors are adults and might not be familiar with that term ).

I do not like putting forum into the domain name. I think you should try to get a niche keyword (or more) in there, only when the domain still reads easily, is memorably, and compliments your marketing/branding.

Here are some ideas for you to help move the brainstorming forward:
  • classical & baroque has 9 & 7 characters respectively, so they are already extending the length of the domain.
  • music would be a good term to have in the domain with them, as it would be possible (over time) for you to build positioning for the searches "classical music" or "baraque music".
    • At the very least you might get boosted long tail results from these terms with other specific keywords attached such as "classical music europe piano concerto".
  • Adding music would bring the total to 14 or 12 keywords total in the domain.
  • Now, I won't check, but I am certain they are taken. Therefore you would need to add a branding element to keep these keywords, but differentiate it from the others (and actually find a good one that is still available).
  • The keyword you choose should allow the domain to be read easily and set the tone for your niche. What is the tone for classical music? Eloquent, sophisticated, beautiful, mastery, other?
  • The keyword might also give clues about what it is your site does, in this case a forum with extra resources as you listed.
Now I'll just place a few combinations randomly and you can snip out those that do not meet your criteria, identify your niche, or set the tone you want for the site, etc.
  • ClassicalMusicAUX.com ("aux" is short for the latin "auxiliam" meaning "resource").
  • ClassicalAUX.com
  • OmniaBaroqueMusic.com ("omnia" is the Latin for "everything")
  • Classicalomnia.com
  • ClassicalSumma.com ("summa" is the Latin for "total")
  • ClassicalMusicSumma.com
  • ClassicalInDepth.com
  • BaroqueInside.com
  • ClassicalExpression.com
  • ClassicalMusicGuild.com
  • VoiceOfClassical.com
  • TheBaroqueChamber.com
  • Baroque1600.com (1600 was the start of the period)
  • Classical1730.com (1730; start of pre-modern, European historical period)
  • NotationByStaff.com (distinguishing characteristic; not great keyword coverage)
  • NoAvanteGarde.com
I did not check to see if any of these were available. Just some ideas to get you started.

FYI - I like using short non-English differentiators. They add interest, are often very short

i would go a step further and try to brand it.

something with symphony:
sympho_____

or work in some instrument/keywords with a noun or adjective
treblecrazy
bassplace
operacleff

etc

obviously, those are dumb... but it should point you in the right direction for creativity

Good idea Brian. I am going to hold off re-vamping the site in this way for a while though. My main admin encouraged me to continue developing the site on its specific topic and not to make it too mainstream just yet. So I think 'malesopranos.com' is alright for now.

Well honestly, it would probably work if the music were of another, more popular type, but since the site is mainly intended to present sort of 'elite' baroque performers, I think the word 'guy' wouldn't be well accepted by my administrators or members .

You are right. I think it will take that proactive targeting of your future members I mentioned to really accelerate your success. I actually like your current names. It is easy to remember and states exactly what the forum topic is without confusion.
