    Question My website?

    Hi,

I own a site called : Chat Freaks ~ Network but am not sure what niche to base it on, do anyone have any ideas.

There are a lot of subjects I like but I am not sure how to set it out the forum categories.

I like a lot of things like Funny Humor, Jokes, Movies, Music, Games, Sport, Television, Books, Technology as well as other things.

Would all the above subjects all fit into an Entertainment category?

Thanks for any help, as I need it.

It is all in the entertainment category as you suggested.

So entertainment is your niche, albeit not very specific one, and certainly a *highly* competitive one.

I think if I was ever going to attempt to jump into that niche, I would really try to differentiate each of your categories. Instead of:

Funny Humor, Jokes, Movies, Music, Games, Sport, Television, Books, Technology
Why not a little different such as:

    • Dead Comic Legends - A George Carlin Tribute Forum
    • Taboo Jokes - Things You Dare Not Say Out Loud Without Bail Money
    • Movies That Flopped & Why We Loved Heaven's Gate Anyway
    • Real Music From the Streets That Doesn't Suck *Much*,
    • Naked Monopoly & Bare Knuckle Scrabble
    • Sports Greatest Eye Gouges & Ball Busters
    • TV That Doesn't Suck & Jimmy Kimmel Live for Comparison,
    • Banned Books You'll Download Anyway
    • The Future Us: Cyborg Limbs, RFID Breast Implants, & Brain Embedded Crackberry.

OK if you think entertainment is to competative now about a movie forum to talk about like horrors, comedy, adventure etc?

I am not saying you cannot be competitive in a competitive niche. However, it is going to be much harder since there is a lot more content out there.

I think the more specific you get the better. So specific movie genres will be more helpful than just movies, although something like the genre for "horror movies" is still pretty general.

Part of what I was getting at above is somewhat about SEO and somewhat not.

It's not in the sense that more interesting forum categories may encourage posting, so that is just a general forum marketing perspective.

But it is about SEO, in the sense that more interesting forum categories can (a) encourage users to post more, thereby creating more long tail content, and also (b) frame the type of content they create, i.e. make it more valuable.

Let's look at "Jokes" for example. If you create a jokes forum, you are going to get the typical stuff. Your old blond jokes, your mama jokes, and other funny but typical stuff.

Now contrast that with something like dead comedians. Framing a category like this will be encouraging posts to load you up with valuable long tail keyword enabled content. Names of all great comedians of the past. But not only that, they'll quote the names of movies they appeared in, and specific jokes they told, or things they did in their lives (mugshots, models, drugs, etc).

So - I would suggest that in the more specific niche I am suggesting your are more likely to encourage the generation of content that can (a) generate interest, and (b) generate traffic.

Using very generic categories is certainly not going to generate as much interest, and the terms may be so vague that they are not likely to generate as much long tail traffic as you could harness otherwise.

If you used categories like I suggested, my recommendation would be to use the /f46/ style forum URLs like we are using here, and then let the thread titles themselves dominate the keyword optimization.

Thanks for all your advice. So would you recommend me sticking to one subject like movies and adding categories like as follows for different genres.

    horror
    adventure
    comedy
    science fiction
    action
    etc...

but keep it just for movies and maybe have an off topic and announcement forum?

I think you could do the multiple entertainment categories if you plan to make it really interesting.

If you go specifically into movies, which is cool genre (for me personally), then you really want to dig in deeper, beyond just the basic genres.

imdb.com movie profiles would give you some ideas on the various stuff you could do, like "goofs" or "notable quotes", etc.

Another great way to be up to date, is to scan specific directors or actors and find new projects that they are attached to. Prior to release or even production, there will not be as much info on the Web about it to compete with you. So it will be easier to rank.
