I want to know who the other person is
I absolutely hate them with a vengeance. I left the UK for a better, stress free life. Binning the mobile was high on my list of things for the bin.
Over the last twenty years, I have seen call outs go from calling into an answer phone every hour or two, then came the pagers telling you there was a call so at your leisure you would find a call box, then satans evil device that helped kill the joys of the service industry.
Call responses went from 24 hrs and no working night time call out because calling your home would wake the family to 3 hrs response 24/7, with customers wanting you there yesterday and bleating if you was a minute over the three hours. The office intrusion went from, "oh my pagers gone off, finish my mug of tea and bacon buttie, then find a call box and phone in" to "whats that sound of trickling water". Along with the normal, "I know your driving, but I cant be bothered to look on my desk for your service report because Im a lazy office dweller, can you just clarify this that and the other" "that police car sounds close, are they pulling you up"
One girl did panic when I drove into a wall causing a lot of damage to a company vehicle when she rang me one day and I used her call as the excuse for the accident
They killed an industry I loved working in. The days of doing a proper job were replaced with meeting customer deadlines and making false excuses parts were needed to meet the call out deadlines and please big paying contracts
The first mobile I ever had the chance to use and fall about laughing at saying "that will never catch on" was another engineers. It had a shoulder bag to cary it around and was about the size of a car battery and weighed about the same. Showing my age a bit with that one.
Mobile phone, device for making phone calls. Simple.
If I want to play games, I use a games machine.
Browse the net or send emails, use a computer.
Watch videos, use the TV and a DVD player.
If someone wants me and Im not near the home phone, simple, Im out or to busy to talk and enjoying life.
Do you get the idea I hate the damn things.
Dont get me going on the eco friendly pile of scrap shoe boxes on wheels people tend to favour these days over proper cars with proper engines.
Well Lee - I must admit that I have similar feelings about them. I do see them as major invasions of privacy especially when I see others answering calls at inappropriate personal time when they really should not need to be interrupted.
I have a very basically device, which I lovingly refer to as a "phone" because actually has a reduced feature set and focused on those features. Punch in #s, click "Talk", and hold to ear.
Since I work primarily from my office, I do not have the necessity for a device to keep me connected as I can understand others certainly do.
However, now that I'm seeing the new generation of smartphone in particular with the beauty and user interactions of the iPhone along with the expected extensibility of the G1, I'm seriously considering taking a fresh look. I expect we'll see lots of great improvements in the next 2 years. Yet, I still won't be answering calls or responding to text messages on off-hours.Let's hope I don't fall victim to Crackberry syndrome once I get started.
This poll is largely to get a sense of what our users are equipped with now, and whether or not it's really a productivity tool that we need to start looking at more closely in the future.
I still have my phone which is the same as the ones they used in The Matrix tucked away somewhere
Bryan did say he could not believe people did not own them![]()
