As long as your site is more or less unique and offers some nice content, I think vBSEO will help you a lot.

I run a Pentax (camera brand) discussion board, which is currently the internet's only vbulletin-powered Pentax-dedicated forum. It's google rankings are now higher than those of the huge sites (i.e. DPReview) that also host sub-forums for Pentax.

I don't know if this general trend was caused by vBSEO or not, but one thing is certain: vBSEO increases search-engine referrals and rankings. I'm not profiting at all from my site- in fact, I don't run a single banner ad. My goal is to provide Pentax photographers with the ideal community and resource, and I think I'm doing a good job of accomplishing that. 1.5K members (900+ active), 32K posts, and around 20K daily pageviews. And rising, of course...I've constantly had over 100 simultaneous users over the last 3 days.

If I could accomplish this (and trust me, I wasn't originally expecting much from vBSEO), you can too!

I bet your users would be ok with the ads if you help contests.... buy some new lens or something, and raffle it off for 'best sun set pic' or something. pay for it with the ad money.
    I agree. Monetize it.

I might, eventually, but I'm really trying to stay away from trashing up the site with adsense.

Do you think intellitxt would work better?

Instead, you can think of allowing limited links to other photography sites. check out photography corner, they are selling links quite well

I have split these posts from the other thread as they had taken it totally away from the OP's question.

Consider showing the ads ONLY to guests. That's what I do, and it does VERY well. Then, your everyday users won't see any difference at all. From my tests, 99% of my Adsense clicks came from guests anyway.
