Nice job Marc. It looks good now.![]()
It's now been about 5 months after making these changes and thought it was time for an update. Unfortunately I haven't seen any membership improvement. We now only have 23 members. At times I see peak viewership usage around 11 or so, but it's primarily bots and spiders. I had an onslaught of spammers registering from Russia so I had to ban users with a .RU extension.
I wish I could figure out a way to boost membership. The last thing I want to do is go to other forums with similar themes and promote my site. That seems in poor taste to me.
Anyhow, that's the update.
How many different keywords are you ranking for now? What are some of those terms?
Have you been doing any other strategies for linking building?
How to Build Links Fast: 101 Tips & Strategies | SEO Book.com
How about your content strategy. Are you creating stuff frequently of high value, and thinking about the content keywords, and title, and also interest levels for your users?
Is your news feed just RSS, or are you changing the titles and summarizing them individually?
I currently have 24 keywords ranging from genre name (i.e. fantasy, horror, sci-fi) to author names, directors and films of the genres.
A lot of the content is generated by RSS feeds for news, so I don't modify keywords or anything on those. I rarely change the titles unless there is some strange characters.
It's going to be difficult to rank for RSS feeds. You see, the content creator will have already pushed the content into the search engines. With the same title and exactly the same text (even if you snip it short), Google will know that it's duplicate and better to rank the original source.
Duplicate Content / Hard to Rank / Consuming Link Value & Authority
The worst part of that, is that it becomes hard to rank these pages, while at the same time, they are consuming link value within your site, and reducing the ratio of original content to duplicates on your site, diminishing your authority with Google.
Do RSS feeding pages provide traffic? Find out in Analytics:
You can use Analytics to find out how much of the traffic you are getting now, is actually landing on these pages. Are they providing you with a significant part of your current search traffic?
To do that, you need to go to your Content Section, and click top landing pages. Then you do a sort (found at the bottom of the table) for URLs containing the part of the URL identifying your RSS sub-forums.
Rewriting the RSS feeds to create non-duplicate content
Now, if you were to rewrite some of these snippets, even if of the same length, you would probably have a better shot at actually having some of them rank for you. One way is to simply focus on a different part of the news than was focused on in the title of the original. Change the title's focus to a new keyword from the article, and quickly rewrite a summary of the content in your own words.
Strategy for Managing RSS Feed Rewrites
One way to do this is to actually pull your RSS feeds into a private forum. Then you post a follow-up which includes its own summary of the news feed. Then select the post you created and use vBulletin to move it out into the public forums.
What to Do With Your Keyword Keywords
Google is telling you something. These are the keywords we believe we can send you traffic for. If it's stuff in the RSS feeds, it's probably because there is very little competition for the keywords that you are able to get some traffic for them.
If these are the keywords you can rank for, why not find some closely related keywords and start generating content for them. Also go through your site and find places where you can interlink between these pages using the keywords as anchor text.
If you do something like that it's possible to move your positions in the rankings up slightly (or significantly) for the terms that you are able to generate a trickle of traffic for.
If you can find ways to build external links to these resources, all the better. But first make sure that they have a reasonable monthly traffic volume before you put too much work into trying to get external links to them, etc. There has to be a reasonable payoff to expect if you are successful.
