I have been having weird issues with google lately as well. I did everything by the book for the domain change that we did about 2 months ago and we lost everything according to what google is showing including page rank.

Google is aware of the problem. I dropped over 400,000 on one of my sites.

    Their reply was:
We're aware of this issue; we've posted a short status note at Webmaster Help Forum Announcements: Known issue: Sitemaps indexed URL count showing zero indexed URLs , where we'll add an update once this issue has been resolved. As mentioned there, this will have no effect on your site's crawling, indexing, or ranking / performance in search results. Thank you for your patience as our engineers look into this issue.

    Cheers
Although NUTNDUN, that shouldn't affect pagerank.

That is cool to hear that it isn't affecting the indexing.

As for the page rank I have no idea. The site is young and started in Feb of this year. We have a really nice short domain name and had a page rank of 2 and even were to the point we were getting site links with the results. I had the bright idea of switching to our spelled out domain name which consists of two keywords that our niche is about thinking it would be even better. I added the new domain and verified it before doing the 301 redirect and adjusted the settings in webmaster tools for the old domain to point to the new one.

I made the domain switch about a month ago and we lost pretty much everything. Lost our page rank, google has 2,200 urls index already which is alright but our search hits are terrible now. I am almost half tempted to switch it back to the old short domain name.

You can increase your page rank by getting more dofollow backlinks. I think pagerank 2 is not ok for 400k indexed forum. It can be 3-4 at least for your forum.

When you move your site you should consider long term profits. If you have plans over 5 years than short term losses should not bother you. The better domain name from seo aspect, brings more direct visitors. Because people remember it and type directly on browser. This kind direct traffic can create great seo impact and it shows the quality of the site for SEs.

Because web is so big google gets sometimes problems. He needs more time to calculate and rank web. There is a "time" factor for seo. You can imagine big seo changes occurs every 2 or 6 months periods. You can follow alexa statistics to see it. Sometimes we observe sudden peaks and drops in all websites at the same time for this reason.

I do need to start working on backlinks. Our site only had 2,800 indexed urls with the page rank of 2 before the domain switch. The whole seo outside of the site is what I lack in which I need to get better with.

Yes there is alot of potential for you to win. You can start safely by seo social bookmarking service. This is efficient seo service. I use it for all my projects.
