In the event of multiple sitemap files, the sitemap_index.xml tells google what they are named and how many there are.

sitemap_1.xml and so on contain the actual URLs the site is publishing.

Perfect. Thanks. I have pointed google to sitemap_1.xml, and ignore sitemap_index.xml for now.

You should only need to point it to the index file, then as more sitemaps are added, Google will automatically know about them through the index.

We have an indepenent sitemap.xml file, generated by gsitecrawler. I don't think vbseo sitemap_index.xml is aware of that.
