Sitemap for whole site or not?

I just installed and got working the sitemap generator but I have a question. My website has the main site and then a part of it is the forums. Now the forums are not even really what we have to offer, just an added bonus for our users who use our services.

Now when I do the sitemap stuff, google says that we have to put the sitemap report link in our website root, not in the forums folder (www.site.com/forums/). So I added this rewrite rule to my main sites .htaccess file (not the forums vbseo rewrite rules):

    RewriteRule ^((urllist|sitemap).*\.(xml|txt)(\.gz)?)$ poker-forum/vbseo_sitemap/vbseo_getsitemap.php?sitemap=$1 [L]
And all seams to work just fine. Now, here comes my question. Is google going to think that this is the sitemap for my entire website? I don't want to give google this report and it think that my website is based only on the forums, since the forums are just a small part of it. It seams like since I am giving this to google through the root of my website and calling it our sitemap, this would make google think that this is everything about my site and what not even though it is only the forums.

Are my worries valid here or not?

    Hello,

you can submit a separate "site" as http://www.site.com/forums/ in Google webmaster account and submit http://www.site.com/forums/sitemap_index.xml.gz into it.

I do not want to add a separate site to Google Webmaster Tools for our forum, as the main site and forum belong together and should share same statistics.

It looks like there should be no harm to our main site's search engine rankings if we submit one separate sitemap for our forums:
Webmaster Help Center - What is a Sitemap file and why should I have one?

A sitemap provides an additional view into your site (just as your home page and HTML site map do), but sitemaps do not replace our normal methods of crawling the web. Google still searches and indexes your sites in the normal way, whether or not you use this program, and sites are never penalized for using this service.
And it looks like it is possible to add multiple sitemaps for the same site in Google Webmaster Tools. So far we have not submitted any sitemap for our main pages or the forum.
