alright awesome... thanks so much. so the sitemap_index.xml.gz does not physically have to be at that location? the htaccess directs it there?

also is this what you recomend... having it in site.com/forum/ rather then just site.com

Yes, the sitemap is NOT physically there, just like /forum123/topic123/ is not physically there either-- it's rewritten to appear there.

as for having the site in /forum/, that's entirely up to you.

IMO, if your site is striclty a forum, there's no point in using /forums/ and it should be in root.
if you have a SITE in addition to the forum, then using /forums/ makes sense.
